Finding a job is hard already, then throw in a few extra hurdles for the neurodivergent community and it can feel like trudging through the mud. Here are a few tips for looking after yourself during this difficult chapter.
#1 Be gentle with yourself
It is important that you give yourself grace in this period. Keep in mind that this is tough, even for neurotypicals, so cut yourself some slack and be kind to yourself. Celebrate every win and practice gratitude to help keep a positive mindset.
#2 Make a schedule
Sit down and make a plan. Reviewing your financial situation and setting up a budget can help you feel more in control. When job searching, break it down into chunks—perhaps by weeks—and set attainable goals for yourself. The idea of applying to 20 jobs in one week probably won’t be possible so adjust accordingly.
#3 Keep track of your applications
Keeping one document with links, important notes, contacts and responses can help you stay organized as well as be a reminder of how much you have already accomplished. Make sure to periodically acknowledge all the hard work you've put in.
#4 Lean on your friends for help
Sometimes it is hard to ask for support, but the people who care about you want to help. Have a friend in HR? Ask them if they are up for a 10 minute phone call to review your CV for clarity and formatting. Have an old coworker whose partner works for a company you applied to? Ask them if they would be willing to pass on your file. It never hurts ask.
#5 Eat, Sleep, and Move your Body
It can be easy to forget about basic needs, especially when the situation is so high-stakes. Taking care of your general well-being will give you more energy to apply to the job search as well as improve the quality of your applications and interviews. You may not feel like exercising, but moving your body lowers stress and can give you more mental clarity and motivation.
#6 Carve in time for fun
Do not let your job search suck all the joy out of your life. Make sure to take time to do things that are fun and that recharge you. If your life becomes consumed by the job search, you can burn yourself out. You deserve joy whether you are employed or not.
Unemployment sucks. Make sure to protect your wellbeing and take care of you! This is temporary and only one small part of the great journey that is your life. Your strengths as a result of your neurodivergence will probably make you the perfect fit for a role in the future, or even setting up your own business. Who knows, it might even be your dream job.
